Progress reports will reflect two grades - both quizzes.  Grades will be entered into the Parent Portal (SIS) by Wednesday, September 11.

WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 3:  This week we will continue Investigations Unit 1: Multiplication and Division

   Students will

  • use the order of operations to solve problems (at this point we do not use exponents - they are coming a little later).
  • use arrays to solve multiplication problems and to write equations using the distributive property.

Students will have their first two quizzes of the year this week (Thursday and Friday).  The first quiz is about number properties (using arrays to       prove prime, composite, square, even, odd).  The second quiz is about order of operations.

     A COUPLE OF NOTES:

    1) In regards to order of operations, you may have learned this using the strategy (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally)!  This stands for parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction.  At this point in the year 5th graders do not use exponents (they will be taught!), so we go in the order 1) grouping symbols (parentheses and brackets)  2) multiplication and division (from left to right) and 3) addition and subtraction (from left to right).  IT IS IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THAT multiplication and division have the same priority - if these two operations are in the same equation you do the one that comes first.  This is the same with addition and subtraction.  It is a misconception that multiplication always comes before division and addition always comes before subtraction.

         2) Your child will be working on a multiplication model called arrays.  They will need to use this tool to solve multiplication problems so that they can write equations that break apart the factors.  Your child will still be encouraged to use the multiplication strategy they feel most comfortable using, however, it is important that they learn how to use the array so they have a deeper understanding of multiplication!

WEEK OF AUGUST 26:  This week we will continue Investigations Unit 1: Multiplication and Division

Students will

  • use arrays to describe the properties of numbers (even, odd, prime, composite, square).
  • use the order of operations to solve problems (at this point we do not use exponents - they are coming a little later).
  • use arrays to solve multiplication problems and to write equations using the distributive property.

WEEK OF AUGUST 19:  This week we will begin Investigations Unit 1: Multiplication and Division

Students will

  • learn how to use arrays models to solve multiplication problems.
  • apply the distributive property to two and three digit by one and two digit multiplication problems.
  • learn the identity of individual numbers.
  • learn how to use multiplication to solve division problems.
  • learn how to use starter problems to solve both multiplication and division problems.
  • increase computational fluency with both multiplication and division.
  • learn the order of operations.

I will be adding resources over the next few weeks for multiplication and division!

Welcome to 5th grade math!  All 5th graders will be in Mr. Kain's math class!  I am very passionate about teaching this amazing subject.  I look forward to a year of learning, discovery, and growth for all students!

HIGHLIGHTS OF 5th GRADE MATHEMATICS:

  • We will use the Investigations 3 curriculum.  This is an inquiry-based math program that will focus on developing an understanding of math, which allows students to solve problems using more personalized strategies and ways of thinking.  Here is a link which will give more information about Investigations for 5th grade:  https://investigations.terc.edu/the-curriculum/?et_open_tab=et_pb_tab_1#my-tabs|6
  • There are 8 units which will be taught.  While there is a lot of content to cover, the main focus areas will be on multiplication, division, and fractions.  Understanding of these concepts will greatly impact learning in all units!
  • Our 5th graders will have math 70 minutes per day.  I will teach 60 minute blocks to each of my switch groups.  In addition, students will have 10-minute math in their homerooms.  10-minute math is an essential component of Investigations.  It is an opportunity for students to increase computational fluency and to revisit concepts from earlier units.
  • Students have access to a math workbook which will be used at school.  In addition, all students will have digital access to Pearson Realize, which supports all math lessons in Investigations.  Further information about how students can access their Pearson accounts will be shared once we access these student accounts at school.
  • Grades in math each quarter will come from a combination of quizzes, in-class math projects, homework, and unit tests.  More specific information will be posted as we begin our first unit in August.
  • Students will have nightly homework in math.  It is very important that your child completes this homework so we can review it the next day in class!

          Let the math begin!
